The time that Sarah and I spent in Barcelona, both together
and apart, was unforgettable. For some reason, the first time I went there
I didn't realize there was a beach, there were museums, there was a culture.
. . Hmph. Must have been my age; not that I didn't enjoy it then also (Wherefore
art thou, Nuria?), but I must admit I gained much more this time around.
Sarah arrived in Barcelona two weeks before me, and got a headstart on her
course, as well as on learning her way around the ancient but modern, traditional
while contemporary, nationalistic and international town that is Barcelona.
After I joined her, we spent three weeks on a tiny bed together (meaning
at night, as we did get up to do things during the day, and even at night
we were often out drinking, meaning we were just downstairs having enjoyed
the luxury in Barcelona of living immediately above the stellar Irish pub
Michael Collins) right across the square from the Sagrada Familia, arguably
the pinnacle of Antonio Gaudi's creations, albeit only partially finished.
You'll see pictures below of the city, old and new, and of friends we met
through Sarah's course and my own; Gaudi's self-proclaimed ultimate work
in the housing complex that became a public park whose name escapes me at
the moment (ah. . Guell); a trip to a winery in Penedés; the cathedral
in the middle of the barrio góticoñ a trip to the seaside
town Sitges; a visit to the port; and some more random shots. . .
